The Pelham Civic Complex is open for the 1997 Hockey season. The facility has two full size sheets of ice (85x200) and a 500 seat banquet hall. One rink has a sand based floor and will maintain ice year around. The second sheet has a concrete floor for a multipurpose surface.

The square foot cost of the facility is 20% lower in construction costs, especially in a market which has seen a continuing rise in costs and the available construction professionals diminish. The Square foot cost was approcimately $59.00 / s.f.

The City of Pelham wanted to build a facility which would be an asset to the community and serve the entire Birmingham area. After an initial discussion of bringing a professional Hockey team to Pelham, it was decided to build a Competition Arena and Banquet Facility for the City of Pelham in Shelby County.

After researching other Ice Skating Facilities throughout the Country they came back to Huntsville, Alabama home of the Number One Ice Facility in the Country.

Eric Milberger was chosen as the architect not only because of his success with Huntsville's Ice Skating Facility but because of his complete knowledge of how a Skating facility would function and knowing it's needs "inside-out".

The $6,900,000 project was designed and put out for bids in six months and was set for a completed construction within one year. The Pelham Iceplex was be opened  the winter of 1996.

This City owned facility is the primere skating facility to lead the South
into the 21st Century...
